罗斯科思想深受尼采名作《悲剧的诞生》影响，所以其抽象艺术可说是肃穆的，旨在探索人类在本质与自由意志之间的挣扎，往往予人一种宗教哲学般的精神之感。
他对艺术创作的执着认真，在以下一件逸事中可见一斑。
罗斯科曾经接受曼哈顿四季餐厅邀请，为之创作一系列抽象画。不过他在亲身走进餐厅，得悉画作将于何处悬挂后，竟然拒绝了这个价值不菲的委托。终，他更把这些画作捐给了伦敦泰特美术馆。
原来，罗斯科当时决定以暗黑色彩为主调，以求引起观者深省静思。按他本人的说话是:「我只对表达人类基本情感有兴趣 - 悲剧、狂喜、厄运，如此种种。」正因他觉得餐厅环境并不适合呈现这样的创作，所以断然终止了这宗合约委托。
传统上，拍卖界把「现当代艺术」这个版块一分为二。是「印象派及现代艺术」，接着是「战后及当代艺术」，简单来说就是以二战为界线。
时移势易，各地不少拍行近年都改变了这个分类。以纽约佳士得为例，如今分为「20世纪艺术晚拍」与「21世纪艺术晚拍」，由于界线推迟至2000年，所以前者拍品阵容会远比后盛大。
好像今回这场「20世纪艺术晚拍」，拍前总估价达US$5.23亿。其中，Joan Mitchell抽象画《无题》，Andy Warhol《十六个积奇》，Richard Diebenkorn《列宁格勒之行的回忆》这些估价俱达US$2,500万的画作，过往都会归类于「战后及当代艺术」。
