此四条屏作于1918年，值吴昌硕艺术创作的巅峰时期。四幅分别描绘了菊花、紫藤、牡丹等花卉。纵观画作，菊花自然豪放，清逸高雅，生机酣畅，给人以凝重、厚朴的美感；牡丹以没骨法为之，色彩鲜艳浓厚，表现出了雍容华贵的气度；紫藤之藤条屈曲盘旋，错落穿插，揖让有度，似断若连，乱而有序，颇似张旭、怀素之草书作品，藤花、藤叶则以没骨法为之，点簇疏密有致，颇具韵味。吴昌硕的写意花卉，一是重气尚势，以浑厚豪放为宗，二是“直从书画演画法”，以书入画，以印入画，以金石气入画，如写如拓，高古凝重。比之白阳更显磅礴，比之徐渭更厚重苍茫，比之八大显得烂漫，比之复堂更沉雄，比之赵之谦更老辣。从此四幅花卉中可见一斑，其章法新奇而沉稳，均以单纯朴厚的大写意笔法绘出花卉与奇石，复色运用酣畅自如，丰富的层次使画面的张力得以增强，苍茫浑厚之气蓬勃而出。
