夜明珠在我国古代民间又名叫“夜光壁”、夜光石”、“放光石”，相传是世界上极为罕见的夜间能发出强烈光芒的奇宝。英国著名学者李约瑟在其巨著《中国科学技术史》中记载，古代中国人喜爱叙利亚产的夜明珠，它别名为“孔雀暖玉”。据说，印度一些人把夜明珠称为“蛇眼石”。据日本宝石学家玲木敏于1916年在他编纂的《宝石志》中记载，日本的夜明珠是一种特殊的红色水晶，被誉为“神圣的宝石”。
