　　褐煤蜡，又称蒙旦蜡（Montan Wax），其来源于成煤植物，是指褐煤经有机溶剂萃取所得的一种复杂有机化合物。其外观为深棕色或棕黑色，断裂面呈贝壳状，且成分非常复杂，其是包含一千多种化合物的复杂混合物，主要根源于造煤植物、沉积环境和煤化程度。褐煤蜡由纯蜡、树脂和地沥青组成，其中，纯蜡占60-70%，树脂占20-30%，地沥青占5-10%。纯蜡主要由一些高级脂肪酸、少量的高级脂肪醇以及由其组成的酯类所构成；树脂主要由萜烯、树脂酸和含氧树脂酸等物质组成；地沥青主要是树脂酸聚合的高分子类物质。

　　褐煤蜡因具有硬度大、熔点高、光亮度好、化学稳定性强、机械性能好、电绝缘性好等优良特性，而具有独特的应用价值，其应用于多个行业的上百种产品，主要十一大应用领域概括如下:

　　（1）日用化学工业:用褐煤蜡的深加工产品精制蜡，作为特效化妆品添加物或载体，如口红、霜膏、发胶，应用量很大；

　　（7）包装工业、热熔胶工业和蜡烛工业；
