PBT早是德国科学家P.Schlack于1942年研制而成，之后美国Celanese公司(现为Ticona)进行工业开发，并以Celanex商品名上市，于1970年以30%玻璃纤维增强塑料投放市场，商品名为X-917，后改为CELANEX。1971年Eastman公司推出了有玻璃纤增强琏和不增强的产品，商品名Tenite(PTMT);同年GE公司也开发出同类产品，有不增强、增强和自熄性的三个品种。随后世界厂商德国BASF、Bayer、美国GE、Ticona，日本Toray、三菱化学，台湾新光合纤、长春人造树脂、南亚塑料等公司先后投入生产行列，生产厂商共计三十余家。
PBT主链是由每个重复单元为刚性苯环和柔性脂肪醇连接起来的饱和线性分子组成，分子的高度几何规整性和刚性部分使聚合物具有高的机械强度，突出的耐化学试剂性，耐热性和优良的电性能;分子中没有侧链，结构对称，满足紧密堆砌的要求，从而使这种聚合物有高度的结晶形和高熔点，分子的结构决定了PBT具有良好的综合性能。PBT是同用工程塑料中工业化晚而发展快的一个品种，它之所以成为工程塑料的后起之秀，首先在于它具有优良的综合性能，以及良好的成型加工性和性能/价格相比，故此PBT塑料虽然到70年代才工业化生产，但很快热销市场，现为五大工程塑料发展快的一种。
